*** BROADWAY IS BACK
***
Something’s coming.
Something good.
While the show that
spawned that lyrical couplet won’t be back, the rest of Broadway is opening up,
and it’s about time. (It’s from West Side Story, in case you’re unfamiliar -
and the recent revival proved too polarizing to risk reopening after
allegations of workplace abuse).
Here’s the rundown:
Broadway shuttered in March of 2020, and the closure punched a $15 billion hole
in New York’s economy, not to mention nearly 100,000 jobs put into limbo or
wiped out altogether. 18 months later, marquees are lighting up again. Over three
dozen shows have already announced their return over the next six months,
including ten brand new plays, seven of which are by Black authors. That’s
record for the industry, and the direct result of a year-long examination and
excoriation of Broadway’s power structures, in which every theater owner and
artistic director is as white as the eponymous Great Way.

The curtains have
been closed and the lights dimmed on Broadway since March 12, 2020. But New
York City is slowly reopening amid the ongoing pandemic and that includes The
Great White Way -- with some notable changes.
Bonnie Comley, a
three-time Tony award-winning producer and President of the Board of The Drama
League, spoke to CNN about new Covid safety protocols being implemented by
Broadway theaters and productions as shows resume.
"It's really
exciting to get back into the theater. The producers and the theater owners
have made the commitment to open it this time and the shows are going on,"
Comley said.
That commitment means
audience members will need to show proof of vaccination and will be required to
wear masks. There will no longer be intermissions or autograph opportunities at
stage doors. Many show times are being condensed to run about 90 minutes.

After a year away,
Broadway's lights are back on. Some of the biggest productions have returned
for vaccinated and masked audiences. From "Wicked" to
"Chicago" to "Hamilton," theaters in New York are open at
100 percent capacity.
NPR's Morning Edition
