As evidenced by the groundbreaking Ken Burns documentary that rolled out in three parts on PBS this week, the world has come to know Ernest Hemingway not only for his brilliance on the page, but his hard-living off of it. Hemingway was notorious for drinking more than the average man — and he got injured quite often throughout his life, most notably after surviving two plane crashes in the ’50s.

The open case of Jane Prichar

 


In 1986, pretty Jane Prichard, 28, of Clarksburg, Md.  was a graduate student at the University of Maryland. As part of her program she was to conduct botany experiments in the field. On September 19,a Saturday, she drove up to the Blackbird Forest State Park, in Delaware, 115 miles from her home, to conduct her work. She arrived at around 7 a.m.

She had been to the park many times and had spent many hours there in past.

A squirrel hunter named Michael P. Lloyd recalled seeing her at 10 AM.

At 5:30 p.m,  an elderly New Jersey couple who were camping in the forest, went for a walk and found Prichard’s body sprawled near her truck, a 1980 Chevy Blazer. She was partially disrobed, with a gunshot to her back. The body was about 20 feet from her equipment, and the shot to the back would indicate that she had gotten away from her attacker and ran for the truck when she was shot with a shotgun. There was no sign of a struggle.

Detectives figured that Jane’s murder was a crime of opportunity and the suspect was one of the 25 to 50 hunters that were at the park that day, as it was the start of squirrel hunting season. She worked undisturbed for a while because she had an opportunity to set up her equipment.  Then the intruder arrived. She was sexually assaulted, or in the process of being sexually assaulted when she ran for her car.

Michael P. Lloyd, the squirrel hunter was home watching the news when he learned about the murder. He had been there that day and recalled seeing  Jane Prichard. He phoned the police and gave them a description of a man he had seen there. "I thought it was my civic duty." He said later. When the police asked him to comedown to the scene of the crime, he did. He said he saw Prichard talking to another hunter at around 10 AM and that the man  was a white male, around 5'9" with a medium build and wearing a brown jacket and blue jeans. He helped them to create a drawing. But instead of thanking him, the police made him their number one suspect.

Remarkably he was charged with first-degree murder and weapon possession. Mike Lloyd, a janitor, was released from prison after ten months after his bail was reduced to $10,000. The next day the state announced it would drop the charges for lack of evidence.  What actually happened was that the cops case fell apart when DNA testing of a hair found at the scene proved conclusively that he could not be the killer.

"I would never make that mistake again" (Trying to help the police)  Mike Lloyd said when he was released from prison. "My advice is, 'Don't get involved. When I first got out I had to pinch myself," he said. "It wasn't till Sunday when I drove my truck that it finally dawned on me. Yeah. I'm out."

Michael P. Lloyd died on his sleep in 2016 at age 50. He was still married to his  high school sweet-heart and still working at Faith Technologies, the same company he worked for when he was arrested, but as a journeyman electrician.

The case is still open.

Your Catfish Friend

 

When I was a teenager, I owned all of Brautigan’s books. I thought he was great. His poems reflected what he was, a sixties poet from the working class. Critics have really pounced on him  in recent years finding his work childish and simplistic. And their right but that’s the entire point of his writing. Sort of a “Poet about nothing”

when the moon was shining

and stand there at the edge

We’ve gathered brilliant artists to imagine summer under the stars in Central Park and are planning a return of Free Shakespeare in the Park beginning July 5 through August 29, with MERRY WIVES, a fresh and joyous adaptation by Jocelyn Bioh, of Shakespeare’s MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR, directed by our Associate Artistic Director and Resident Director Saheem Ali.

Set in South Harlem amidst a vibrant and eclectic community of West African immigrants, MERRY WIVES will be a celebration of Black joy, laughter, and vitality. A New York story about the tricks of the heart, performed in the heart of the City.

In partnership with City officials, health and safety experts, and with our theatrical unions, the performance schedule, safety protocols, and free ticket distribution details will be forthcoming over the next several weeks.

New York has legalized recreational marijuana, after years of failed attempts and stalled efforts.

State lawmakers approved a bill on Tuesday that legalizes the drug for adults 21 and older and moves toward the creation of a potential $4.2 billion industry that could become one of the nation’s largest markets. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the bill into law on Wednesday.

Is recreational marijuana legal in New York?

Using it is now legal. Selling it will be legal too, once regulations are in place.

The music of HAIR achieved, perhaps, the most diverse recognition of any Broadway musical, with The 5th Dimension’s “Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In,” Three Dog Night’s “Easy to Be Hard,” The Cowsills’ “Hair,” and Nina Simone’s “Ain’t Got No/I Got Life” reaching radio-listening ears throughout the ’60s and ’70s. Many of the score’s numbers, however, were seemingly unconducive to pop success. “Sodomy” and “Hashish” are virtually musical inventories of sexual taboos and psychedelic drugs, respectively, and other numbers like “Colored Spade” and “Black Boys” presented assertive discussions on race and interracial love. Nevertheless, the musical’s original Broadway cast album charted at number one in the Billboard 200. No other Broadway musical cast album has reached that spot since, although The Hamilton Mixtape hit number one last year.

Cannabis a Theatrical Concert with creator and host of the said concert, Baba Israel. This project is based on Smoke Signals: A Social History of Marijuana – Medical, Recreational, and Scientific by Martin A. Lee (2012). The book’s author has committed to collaborating on the project and will serve as a consultant in the project’s development. The show will feature “mash-ups” and arrangements of iconic music; La Cucaracha of the Mexican Revolution, Louis Armstrong and other Jazz “vipers”, the Beat era, 60’s Rock n’ Roll, and Reggae, right up to the Hip Hop of today.

Cannabis goes by many names, and takes many forms. Safe to say you can find nearly all them in Telluride — or at least you could until now. Soon, a new form of marijuana will waft into town. You can’t inhale it or eat it, but you can sing and dance to it. “It” is “Cannabis the Concert.” The performance, a one-night-only event, takes place at the Sheridan Opera House on Wednesday.

The Marijuana-Logues is an Off-Broadway comedy show in New York City. Arj Barker, Doug Benson and Tony Camin are the creators and performers. It is a four-man stand-up comedy show, with the majority of the humor centered on the drug marijuana. The show's title is a play on the long-running Broadway show The Vagina Monologues. The show began its run in March 2004. There is also an original cast recording released in 2004 by Comedy Central, and a book. When the show toured, actor Tommy Chong became part of the tour for two cities. His legal concerns, including that audience members were actually smoking marijuana at some of the shows early in its tour, and pressure from his probation officer ultimately caused him to leave the show.

In all honesty, who else better than he to helm a production of the thoroughly madcap and deliciously campy musical now onstage at Darkhorse Theater through this weekend as the final show of ACT 1's 2016-17 season?

Weed Shop the Musical was created by Becca Grumet and Madelyne Heyman in 2016, and has since had a successful extended run at the Eclectic Company Theatre in North Hollywood.
The show follows Alicia, a cheerful doctor with a brand-new medical marijuana practice in town, and Dave, an enthusiastic dispensary owner, as they search for love in Los Angeles. While weed-friendly, this show is for everyone, touching on universally heartwarming themes of love, self-expression, and identity with a hodgepodge of musical styles from classic Broadway tunes to funk.

BAKED the musical

However, upon learning that the school delinquent, Z (Yuchi Chiu), is making bank selling a strain of designer marijuana, the three team up and hatch a get-rich-quick scheme: bake sales, but the pastries are laced with weed. The operation succeeds (contrasted with the Huang family bakery, which is falling deeper and deeper into debt), until Mingli finds out and confronts Jane, while Yunzhou fails to get a loan to save the family bakery. In a split-second decision to save her reputation, Jane scares all the customers away. Jane, Kasey, and Z are left with no other option but to sell to the mob—well, the Pepsi mob. After Z nearly loses his life in the following altercation, the baked business breaks up and Jane’s guidance counselor, Mrs. Feldman (Anna Brockman), who works as a cop on Tuesdays and Thursdays, reveals to Jane’s parents that she didn’t get the scholarship. Kasey and Jane’s friendship disintegrates as Yunzhou reminds Jane that one’s response to failure doesn’t have to define one’s life. A year later, Jane attends the same local college as Kasey (though they aren’t friends anymore) and still works at her parents’ bakery, now called Baked!
